An alarm was raised this afternoon in Whitehall after police found a “suspicious” item near Downing Street.
The Metropolitan Police found a discarded item and a cordon was put in place whilst bomb disposal investigated.
Several government buildings were put into lockdown and police motorbikes could be seen blocking entrances to the road.

In a statement, the Met Police said, “Shortly before 11:00hrs on Wednesday, 8 September, officers on duty in the vicinity of Downing Street noticed a discarded item on Whitehall.
“A cordon has been put in place while an assessment is carried out to determine whether the item is suspicious.”
Some 15 minutes later the police confirmed the item was harmless and they lifted the cordon.
A later statement added, “The item has been assessed and is not suspicious. The cordon is being lifted.”
Boris Johnson was forced to leave Downing Street through a different exit as he was due to appear before Prime Minister’s Questions at the House of Commons.
